With long summers and wide open spaces Central Otago is an outdoor playground with bike trails, river activities and amazing fishing & hunting opportunities.
Clutha Gold Bike Trail
This 73km bike trail takes you along the banks of the Clutha River (Mata-Au). Highlights include green valleys, farmland, a secluded gorge and beautiful river views. The terrain is undulating rather than steep so this bike trail is ideal for all ages & abilities.
Passing through 4 townships on the way – Roxburgh, Millers Flat, Beaumont and Lawrence bikers should allow 2-4 days to complete depending on pace. Bikers can choose to complete all or part of the trail and break their journey at Mata-Au Lodge, Beaumont.
We can arrange bike transfers to/from the trail and guests can choose to have a BBQ pack waiting for them with a cooked or continental breakfast option also available. This means lighter bike packs and the promise of a luxurious overnight stay on the track.
Roxburgh Gorge Bike Trail
The Roxburgh Gorge trail is an easy 30 min drive from Mata-Au Lodge and offers a wilderness intermediate biking experience through the stunning Roxburgh Gorge following alongside the mighty Clutha Mata-au River.
Bikers can choose one of three journey options: to experience the entire trail from the town of Alexandra to Lake Roxburgh Hydro Dam by including a jet boat journey linking Doctors Point and Shingle Creek; cycle or walk from Alexandra downriver to Doctors Point and back again; or start at Lake Roxburgh Dam and head upriver to Shingle Creek, and return
Whatever you choose, you can enjoy a relaxed start or end to your trail adventure at Mata-Au Lodge. Please ask us to arrange a bike shuttle or bike / luggage transfers at time of booking.
Clutha River Jet Boating
The mighty Clutha (Mata-au) River is deservedly popular with recreational jetboaters and there are also commercial jetboat companies that operate in Central Otago. With fast flowing waters and beautiful, remote scenery this is an ideal adventure while you are staying with us.
Central Otago Fishing
With the fastest flowing waters of any river in New Zealand the Clutha (Mata-au) River has high catch rates and offers anglers brown trout, rainbow trout, salmon & perch.
If you prefer lake fishing then Lake Onslow (east of Roxburgh) provides great, safe fishing opportunities.
New Zealand Hunting
Mata-Au Lodge is surrounded by rugged farmland/high country which offers great opportunities for Red Stag Hunting, Fallow Deer Hunting and Wild Pig Hunting. An area known as the Blue Mountains is a well kept secret and ensures a unique New Zealand hunting experience. Please contact us directly to arrange this.
After a day out in the hills, the Lodge is the perfect luxury retreat and is ideal for non hunting partners who can relax and enjoy the river scenery. We can arrange catered evening meals or you can cook up one of our BBQ packs and enjoy outdoor dining under the stars.
